How to Hire a Church Drummer Who Actually Serves the Song

Every music director has lived it: the audition was fireworks, the first Sunday was war. Hiring a church drummer is about finding control, not volume. Here is how to test for it.

What to test in the audition

  • Dynamics on command: can they take the same groove from whisper to full praise and back in eight bars?
  • The click test: two minutes with a metronome at 72bpm exposes more than any solo.
  • Following the MD: change the song mid-flow. Watch their eyes, not their hands.
  • Highlife and native grooves: Nigerian congregations will request them; a drummer who only plays western gospel patterns is half a drummer here.
  • Volume discipline in a live room: most Nigerian church acoustics are hard walls and zeal. Ask for full worship energy at conversation-friendly volume.

Fair rates in 2026

  • Per service: ₦10,000 – ₦40,000 depending on city and church size
  • Monthly retainer: ₦35,000 – ₦120,000
  • Weddings/events: ₦40,000 – ₦100,000

Keep them

Good drummers leave over three things: late payment, no rehearsal structure, and being preached at about volume with no monitoring solution. Pay on the day, rehearse on schedule, and invest in drum shields or in-ears before you invest in complaints.
